Céline Shen x Chip Wei Wong
Telephone object, mirror, and makeup utensils, black and white photography
15 x 8 x 3 cm
Mirror Box is an artwork embodying a reflection on the modern culture of selfie, of superficiality and our growing obsession with self-image.
This object takes the form of a mobile phone, an emblem of the digital society. The screen of the phone object is replaced by a mirror delicately hidden by a black and white photographic print, revealing a secret compartment containing
make-up utensils. The juxtaposition of this image in the act of adorning oneself on the mirror invites us to question ourselves
how social media and selfie culture have influenced our perception of aesthetics, intimacy and authenticity.
The mirror invites viewers to look at themselves, yet it does not refer to any image, except only a few reflections of gleams of self, but questions us about our relationship with technology, vanity and self-representation.
